Will’s Story
Will grew up in South London and began trumpet lessons at the age of seven. By eleven, he was attending Pimlico School’s specialist music course and the Centre for Young Musicians, where he studied with Cliff Haines. He went on to become principal trumpet of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra.
While at music college, Will studied under Denis Egan, Paul Cosh and Crispian Steele-Perkins, and it was during this time that his interest in trumpet design began.
What started as curiosity soon developed into a brass repair workshop, initially serving local schools and music centres. As his skills evolved, he began undertaking customisation work and full rebuilds for some of the world’s finest players.
This progression led to the creation of his own trumpets. The first of these earned him a prestigious contract to build 24 trumpets for the British Royal Air Force, followed by a commission from the Beijing Army Band to design and build a set of herald trumpets.
Alongside his workshop, Will maintained a strong commitment to teaching, building a large school brass department, running holiday courses and teaching trumpet at Charterhouse School. Although he no longer teaches in schools, he continues to work closely with players of all levels, using his experience and specialist knowledge to tailor instruments to their individual needs.

In 2011, Will developed Spencer’s Snake Oil valve oil. Sold worldwide under the Denis Wick brand for the next ten years, it became a firm favourite among brass players. After the partnership with Denis Wick ended in 2023, the original formula was revised in 2025, resulting in a faster oil with improved environmental credentials. Today, Spencer’s Snake Oil is more popular than ever and is available from most specialist brass retailers
