Anatomy of a Spencer Trumpet
All Spencer trumpets are designed and built by Will Spencer, whose 40 years’ experience as a player, teacher, and trumpet technician give him a unique insight into creating exceptional musical instruments.
Every component is carefully selected and fitted to within fractions of a millimetre, resulting in instruments that deliver the performance characteristics demanded by the most discerning performers.
Two distinctive features found on most Spencer trumpets are the tone collar beneath the lower third valve cap and the extended ferrule on the bell tail. The removable tone collar enhances tonal intensity, projection, and slotting, while the bell tail sleeve produces a warmer sound with fewer harsh overtones at higher dynamic levels.
Spencer trumpets are typically finished in bright silver plate with laser engraving, though alternative finishes and specifications can be discussed.
Below is an example of a heavyweight Spencer trumpet, illustrating the main components used in its construction. Other models employ different leadpipes, tuning slides, and bell combinations, allowing Will to create instruments that excel across all musical genres and can be tailored to meet individual players’ requirements.
